According to IRS you are citizen(Any one who stays more that 180 days and pays taxes in us is a citizen according to them). You can apply for student Loan as a citizen if you use this clause intelligently. This is how most students get credit cards. If you say you are on H1 to a credit card company they will never give you the card.
Again this is only my opinion. I might be wrong.:)
What you are talking about here is called 'Resident Alien' - the IRS definition of someone who pays taxes just like a citizen on a regular form 1040 (by the way, students are non-resident aliens and pay taxes on 1040NR). To open any financial account you must disclose if you are citizen/resident alien or non-resident alien, and yes some companies do not open accounts to non-resident aliens, but it is acutally up to companies where they draw the line - most credit card companies are glad to open accounts to foreign students (hey, it's a free country, you can't tell a company whom to lend the money and whom not, provided it's not taxpayer money).
The kicker about the student loans is that there is special Federal financing available only for loans taken out by citizens and LPRs (Sally Mae and recent student loan scandal ring any bells? yes, these are loans). So, oups, no luck here without a green cards.

if you've benefited from the forum, please think about participating IV efforts. This campaign is working hard towards bringing relief to the EB community so that we don't have to go through H-1B extension/transfer hassles.

Yes, same experience with us. The school had some evaluators and they are the only ones that are considered, so check with the university for the list first.

Seems like NVARS has introduced a new process which is supposed to be more streamlined for getting appointment online but I am not sure of some of it's verbage.
We want to ensure that applicants already in the scheduling process are not negatively impacted by the change. In order to ensure you receive the visa services you have paid for, please review the guidance below regarding transition timetables.
* Applicants who have already scheduled an appointment at a U.S. consulate on or after September 1, 2010 through NVARS:
If you have already scheduled to attend an appointment through NVARS, please pay your MRV fee prior to September 1, 2010 and bring your Scotiabank receipt with you to your appointment. If you have not already scheduled an appointment, we recommend that you wait until September 1, 2010 or later to pay the MRV fee and register through the new service.
I highlighted the text in bold. My appointment is scheduled for Vancouver on Sept 8. What does this mean to me? Will I need to be physically in Canada prior to September 1, to be able to go to a Scotia bank and make payment there? This is insane. I still haven't gotten my canadian visa stamped on my passport so I can enter Canada.

if possible try to complete the course or take CPT ...As of now you are in legal status only but if you dont complete your course..you may have some tough questions to answer when you go for visa stamping.. also try to search in murthy..you will have lot more information.

Its an MBA course and I am in software field there wont be any justifiable CPT I guess..Also, there was an RFE generated during H-1 processing asking for my status in between times. I sent I-20 to the INS and then only my H1 was approved.
What kind of tough questions you think they can ask?? I am very new to all these and do not have much knowlege but only thing i did is try to maintain status legally..is there anything wrong that I did??

It is difficult to get H1b without client letter. Also many consulting companies stopped H1b because of RFE and denials. It is a good idea to try job to 2 to 4 more weeks.
Sorry to know about your layoff. What I would suggest is try to get a Consulting company ( maybe desi ) to transfer your H1. That would give you some leeway to find a project again.

It should be printed on both sides of the same page I have just sponsored my parents, inlaws and uncle and aunt(Total 6 people at the same time). All of them got 10 yrs visa.Though I have provided all documents, they did not bother to look in to those papers. They have been asked simple questions and given their visa.

yes it looks like a boiler plate RFE. you will just need to be cautious with the information you are giving to RFE and Make sure it is consistent with what ever you provided earlier.
Also, get your collegues/managers from previous company to give you letters stating that you worked with him/her for that company during the stated period. Like explained above get as much consisten evidences liek w2's pay stubbs for that period. For the Ability to pay , have your company get with the CPA and prepare those statements.
