I would be surprised if we saw a 64 bit fcp before Lion. Apples qtkit API, which is thie only QuickTime API that you can compile in 64 bit, is really, REALLY primitive. Its going to require massive updating befor you would even think of running something like fcp with it. You cannot do anything more advanced than splice two videos together with it now. Hell even enumerating all th e codecs you can export to requires going down to 32 bits, and even the stuff that does compile in 64 bit requires a separate 32 bit process to actually do the work. T e sad thing is that apple has had plenty of time to update this API but they have essentially done nothing with it, which shows you how much they care about the pro users nowadays

It never crossed your mind that maybe that's exactly what they've been working on all this time? That completing Quicktime X alongside the next version of FCP is what has caused this delay? It's not written in stone that the next version of Quicktime has to ship with Lion. They can ship it with FCP and pump it out in software update.

Wow, Batman Arkham Asylum was the first game I brought for my 360 and is definitely in my top. 5 most favorite games (Can't wait for the second one!). Any chance you could post the original please? :p

That isn't entirely true. iPhone 1,1 (and soon iPhone 1,2) users can't run all apps. Anything that requires 4.0 (probably 4.3~5.0 for iPhone 1,2) won't run. Neither will things that require a certain amount of horsepower (say like Infinity Blade).

Good point. I was going more for current devices, as I assumed the other post was.

You know what they say about assumptions though. You make an ass out of u and someone named mptions.

    World War Sue.

Apple has something like 200+ patents (http://www.mad4mobilephones.com/the-21-most-important-iphone-patents/562/) for the iPhone. This could get bloody when Apple responds with additional counter suits. I would pity those called for jury duty to make sense of the technical minutia. The breadth of the patent portfolios will be too detailed to battle in court. They are presented primarily as a way of saying "back off!" Ultimately, cross licensing agreements are forged.

I got an ihome ip40 for christmas and it has been working fine with my iphone 4 until recently. It still charges the phone, but when I try to use the ipod function on the dock and play music, it says "accessory is not compatible with iphone". Any suggestions on what the issue on this may be? Thanks

My understanding is, that is not 'quite' right:

Apple is firmly in the Blu-Ray camp (as Microsoft is firmly in HD-DVD).

While there is theoretical HD-DVD support in DVD Studio Pro (and DVD Player), this is ONLY for encoding and decoding mpeg-2 (or H.264). HD-DVD spec 'includes' those codes, but is designed for VC-1 (incidentally, a Microsoft-originated codec). Apple Software, at this time, cannot play VC-1 Video spec - regardless of the media.

It remains to be seen how Leopard changes that; since Apple IS in the Blu-Ray camp, but not HD DVD, I would argue they will probably not going to support VC-1 decoding, and certainly not encoding (why would they? They would have no hardware to burn it), while a Blu-Ray drive will certainly be supported by player and DVD Studio Pro; Blu-Ray does not use VC-1 (in fact, one could argue, currently they are behind the times as they still use mpeg-2, since the H. code, while written into Blu-Ray spec, is not efficient enough yet, and no Sony video release currently supports it, making for - at this time anyway - less efficient compression than HD-DVD).

    cheers,
    d

There is already a universal version.

The original poster is talking about support in general. The original summary incorrectly states that Apple is preferring Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, when in reality they're in both camps.

Your jailbreak either screwed up or you have changed some sort of setting in activater or SBsettings.

Have you done anything with activiator or SBsettings and if so what?

I'm simply stating the point that I don't understand how people can keep debating this "issue" when there are CLEARLY more important things to talk about. I think because Apple is so successful they get picked on by the media and other Company's seem to get a free pass.

...And just because I have "newbie" next to my name doesn't mean I don't know how forums work buddy.

"Buddy" I didn't even notice your join date nor do I care.

There are more important things to talk about than a white iPhone - yet there are threads upon threads.

For one - this is an Apple community - not a Sony one.

Second - Starting to deflect the issue by comparing it to Sony is taking the thread off topic.

No one's getting a free pass.

To me it looks like necessary groundwork to bring this kind of functionality to touch devices, but I hope there are people out there who can create a more intuitive interface paradigm than just having a ton of dense pop-over palettes etc.

Good to see Adobe's working on this, though.

If you would like an informative take on the issue read:

    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/blogs/2011/04/28/the-unedifying-arrogance-of-apple/

Unfortunately that article has at least one fundamental mistake about how the data in consolidated.db is obtained that leads to incorrect conclusions.

Their statement "Yes, cell towers can be “located more than one hundred miles away”, but only if you live in the Mojave Desert." gives away part of that thinking. The database does not contain a list of cell towers/locations that the iPhone has identified by itself - local geography is totally irrelevant, because consolidated.db records a list of cell towers sent from Apple. I tested this by wiping my iPhone clean, not restoring from a backup, then leaving it sit for a while on my desk on Saturday.

Within 30 minutes consolidated.db held data on about 30 cell towers across a range of 80km, and every single one had the same timestamp. It could do this because it's received a dump of relatively nearby towers and wifi points from Apple. All the iPhone has recorded of its own position is a few strong towers, sent off the IDs of those to Apple, and received back a file with info on more towers around me that may be useful in the future - Apple selects which towers, and by looking at iPhoneTracker's dump of other folks' consolidated.db files, it's across a wide wide physical range.

That's the biggie. The list of locations in consolidated.db ARE NOT DISCOVERED BY THE PHONE ITSELF - It's a list sent from Apple, and all entries are timestamped AFTER that information comes back from Apple, which is not necessarily when the phone was remotely near that location.

Wifi turned out even more distant, timewise. I (and my phone :) was in a location 5km away from home, and after returning I checked my consolidated.db for any wifi points from near that place. There were none. I checked again that night, there were none. I checked again the next morning, and there they were, 1750 wifi points timestamped around 2am - that's a list of wifi points across several kilometres, for a position I was at more than 12 hours beforehand. I could have been on the other side of the country at that timestamp, or I could have been in the same place. For looking back and 'tracking' me or my phone it's about as accurate as throwing a dart at a spinning globe. For enabling me to find my own location through aGPS, it lets me find my precise location if I choose, in seconds instead of 13 minutes. I'm the one who benefits.

Worth mentioning apart from the 2MB limit is that new data from Apple on the same cell towers or wifi points overwrites the old data. Last I looked at my consolidated.db, (because I haven't moved more than a few km) every cell tower in it has a timestamp of the most recent time it was updated; today that's Thursday morning (16 hours ago) There are no cell tower entries with timestamps before that, even though I've been checking consolidated.db since Saturday when it first showed a record of towers approximately near me. More succinctly, each unique object (cell tower or wifi point) only has its location stored in consolidated.db once, and that's its most recent known position as sent from Apple.

I feel this log shouldn't be readable so easily, and it could do with being smaller (There's no point to stale data from a year ago on a city I haven't been near for the same time, when wifi points and cell towers could have changed dramatically) but as for tracking? It's about as close to tracking me as carrying a bag of maps is.

    its up and running!!!

    4.8 Terabytes over 5 Hd's, 2Gb of Ram, Dual 867Mhz G4 processors and I'm a happy man!

Just need the graphics card to arrive and I'm pretty much done hardware wise. Then its just setting the machine up.

Thanks for you help so far guys'n'gals.

BTW no pictures as yet. Being a noob to tower based systems I didn't order long enough data cables so the inside is real messy. I think I'll just go for 1 meter length cables and cable tie them in place nice and neat. That will aid airflow as well.

One thing just quickly. As Nap is now working, is the connector that the main system fan normally plugs into throttled? Its just that at the moment I've got the fan plugged into a 12v supply and its running max rpm all the time. I would like to get it temperature controlled to keep the noise down even more.

It will be interesting when these new dvd discs cost around $5 for 50GB, then I will jump on it.
Are you sure? By then you will get at least 1TB hard drives for 100$ (there are already 750GB drives on the market). I still would prefer the hard drive. Faster data access and easier handling...
